A Psychiatric Viewpoint of the Child's Best Interests in Divorce

Abstract
The concept of childhood as a distinct period of life is a relatively recent one. These days, people continue to pay scant attention to children. Changes within the contemporary family, particularly the high increase in the divorce rate, are
profoundly
influencing the lives of not only the parents but the children as well. Although we usually assign top priority to our children, the doctrine of "best interests of the child" has not received full recognition. The role of the child psychiatrist
in
child
placement conflicts has generally been conceptualized as being that of an advocate for the best interests of the child. However, we need more research and applied programs oriented toward the identification and facilitation of support system to
help
children and their parents cope with the changes and stress associated with divorce.
